Message From The Artist

“When I initially started writing music for Vermilion Dawn, I was focused on creating a musical journey that myself and listeners could embark on together. Something where you can feel like you’re actually in the setting of the music. It always fascinated me how bands like Fallujah, The Faceless, and Rivers of Nihil can transport you to an otherworldly dimension for a short time. You’re never physically there, but your mind is, and that’s the feeling I have been chasing with my own music.

Every song in my recent EP “Boreal Valley” is geared towards this idea of a musical journey. It’s an attempt to evoke thoughts of dark magic, shadows in the woods, and primordial evils long forgotten by man. It’s meant to feel weighty and depressing as if you’re staring over a foreboding location in a game like Dark Souls knowing you’re not meant to be there. One of my bigger goals when writing the music was to keep the tracks as diverse as possible. I wanted every song to have its own vibe while elements such as the vocals or the droning guitar ambiences kept it all grounded to a certain mood. To me this has been my best attempt at that concept so far.”

More About the Album:

Technical death metal has become a genre where technical proficiency is no longer enough to stand out from the crowd. The scene has become oversaturated with talented individuals who make music that all sounds far too similar. In order to stand out, it comes down to song writing ability, where artists can create tracks that are actually memorable and interesting, rather than just showing off their technical skill.

Vermilion Dawn is one such project, as Cody Stonebrook gives us technical death metal that is able to actually capture the interest of fans of more traditional death metal and die hard tech death fans alike. The production is high enough that the album even has potential to draw in deathcore fans and yet there’s enough raw aggression and attitude that it also appeals to metal elitists.

Listeners will draw comparison to bands such as The Faceless, Rivers of Nihil and Fallujah, while even finding some similarities to Cattle Decapitation. While the album clearly draws influences from these bands, this is not a worship band, as Cody gives more than enough fresh riffs, guitar tones and vocal deliveries in order to stand out as his own unique tech death powerhouse.

The guitarwork on the album is easily its greatest draw card, showcasing Cody’s impressive technical ability. Not only is it technically masterful, but it displays a high level of variety of tone and tempo. At no point does the music ever feel boring or repetitive. The same can be said for the vocals, which vary from deeply guttural and highly powerful to raw and bitingly shrieked.

If you’re a technical death metal fan in any capacity, you won’t want to miss this one. Boreal Valley is the logical evolution of Vermilion Dawn’s sound and stands to become an underground tech death gem, if not a true classic.
